Whale Watching PD Cairns Chapter
On a glorious morning in late July, 5 happy PTGAA guides set off onboard Reef Magic II to Fitzroy Island for the first of our PD days since the start of Covid.
Greeted by friendly staff upon boarding and the required safety demo and Covid briefing, we were soon underway on our 45-minute transfer to our island paradise.
With 2 hours free time, some chose to stay and enjoy the view, whilst the remainder took a short 20-minute walk to Nudey Beach (which btw is NOT a nudist beach).
What a bonus to see a small echidna on the beach!
It was soon time to re-board Reef Magic II for our whale watching adventure. The cruise took us southward around and behind Fitzroy Island for 2 hours.
A view not many people get to sea (see what I did there!). Whilst it was a little bumpy the large catamaran and the skilful skipper handled it well. We were lucky enough to see two different humpback whales and one was kind enough to put on a display and breach, just once, to keep us happy. We were also informed that the more noise we made the more curious the whale would be and come closer to investigate. I have to say, I’m not convinced about that but we all put on the suggested performance.
Overall the day was highly enjoyable and I couldn’t recommend enough. The crew were friendly, approachable and informative. The onboard Marine Biologist delivered the information in such a friendly way answering everyone’s questions and keeping our interest. We learnt a lot about these fabulous creatures and can’t wait for next year’s whale watching season.
